Permanent Residence/ Jobs in Education
kia ora tina,
sharing your enthusiasm regarding nz education, i’m considering to migrate to nz in 2012 in order to work in the field of education.
could you please provide me with some information on how to gain PR status and what to consider concerning my future career (e.g. how to get registered as a professional; job hunting, …)? i’m especially interested in the ECCE and tertiary/adult education sectors. my degree is not in teaching but in science of education, so a job e.g. as an adviser or for the ministry might be more appropriate – except my work experience in the EU would be accepted as a qualification. [please keep my personal data confidential and, if necessary, contact me by email! thank you!]

Kia Ora, Kiwiana,
(Is it okay if I call you that?)
I would highly recommend that you send the transcript of your study courses to a few tertiary providers (i.e. CPIT, Otago Polytechnic, EIT) in New Zealand for assessment. Then you would know exactly, what papers/qualifications will be accepted in NZ. This may vary from institution to institution. Maybe there is a short programme you could take to gain a NZ qualification that would enable you to work in the required field. Once you graduated from a NZ tertiary provider, you receive a 6 months work seeking visa. With this it should be easy for you to find an exciting job in your chosen career and your employer would assist you in applying for a work visa. This work visa will generally be valid for this particular employment. After 2 years you can apply for permanent residency which at this stage be just a formality.
I will have a look which tertiary providers offer educational science and will be back in touch in the next couple of days.
As you might know, most tertiary providers take a break in January, so if you contact them now, please don’t expect an answer until February.
Congratulations by the way, with posting your content here you also qualify for the draw to win a whalewatch tour!

LikeDislikeHi Kiwiana,
Hope you had a good start into the year. I looked into the science of education: you could do post grad studies (1 – 2 semesters, post grad diploma) at AUT, Auckland University, Waikato University, Massey, Canterbury University or Victoria. All these universities seem to offer courses in Early Childhood Education as well as admin/Leadership in Education. I believe this would enhance your career opportunities in NZ significantly if you’d like to work in the role you are anticipating and as pointed out before, you would receive a 6 month job seeking visa.
Of course, you could also arrive with a work and travel visa and have a look for a job while you are here. In my opinion, you need to be here in order to find a job. However, I also believe it would be difficult to get a government department to assist you in applying for a work visa (which you would need to work in NZ), so in this regard the additional qualification would help.

LikeDislikeOne more thing – you probably know about Education New Zealand? http://www.educationnz.org.nz
and http://www.newzealandeducated.com
If not, have a look at their websites and see if they offer any vacancies.
Other ideas of departments that you could possibly approach with your CV would be regional health boards and the Maori Health organisations.
In any case it would be worth knowing what these agencies have to say when you approach them.
